My name is Sue Griffiths

Based near Hexham, Northumberland, I have 8 years of experience working as a qualified counsellor.  My clients are often people who feel stuck: stuck as victims of controlling or unhelpful relationships; stuck in the consequences of traumatic events like rejection, betrayal, disappointment or loss; or stuck in personal  behaviours they would like to change.
Life experiences sometimes leave us low in self-confidence and self-worth, angry and depressed.  We wonder how to break old patterns and move on. Counselling offers a chance to bring some of your personal stuff into a safe place with someone who will guard your confidence, respect your privacy and not judge you.

My clients set the pace of our work.  For effective change to take place through counselling, we will develop a constructive partnership together based on trust and mutual respect. This creates a safe place for clients to explore problem areas in their own lives.

I may challenge clients, but I won't direct.  I don't usually give advice.  I help clients to acquire new skills and approaches to handle the past and cope with the present.  I provide tools to enable clients to move to on in a positive way.  I can offer creative ways of working towards these objectives.
What Issues can I bring to Counselling?
About Me
Coming from a professional background as a working mum in teaching, and with a Ph.D in English, my own life experiences prompted me into working towards becoming a counsellor in 1999. I completed my Diploma in Counselling in 2003 at University College, Chichester, West Sussex.

Since then, I have worked extensively with adult survivors of different kinds of abuse, and a whole range of issues arising from clients' relational and personal difficulties.

I am an Accredited Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP Accred.) and adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework for good practice. I am a Member of the Association of Christian Counsellors (ACC). I am UKRCP Registered Independent Counsellor/Psychotherapist and currently work as an Independent Practitioner.  I have attended workshops and courses in Using Art in Counselling, Dissociative Identity Disorder, Self-Harming, Eating Disorders, Critical Incident Trauma, Stress and Anxiety.  I have a Diploma in Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.  I am fully insured and hold an Enhanced CRB check.

I describe my approach to counselling as broadly integrative humanistic and person-centred.
I offer a free introductory one hour session, without obligation, for anyone who would like to check out whether counselling with me may be helpful to them.

Each client is different.  It's always good to discuss together before we start so that we know what you are hoping to gain from counselling.  It's also good to have some idea of how many sessions may be needed and how you might like to proceed.  We can then agree some boundaries, and ensure regular evaluations of the work as we progress.
My standard fee is £40 per one full hour session.   I may discuss concessionary rates with clients.
